Otofonix Encore Hearing Amplifier Review

Otofonix Encore is the new premiere line of hearing amplifiers, which offer more options, features and noise reduction than the Otofonix Elite model. Loaded with the latest digital technology, it’s designed to provide excellent sound quality, comfort and discretion to the wearer. Like the Elite model, the volume control has been kept on a manual basis, leaving you firmly in the driving seat when it comes to controlling sound levels.

The Adaptive Directional Microphones employ a front and rear microphone to improve your ability to focus on the conversation in front of you and selectively reduce or eliminate background noise around you.

Smartphone user will like the new Telecoil feature. The telecoil inside your Encore picks-up the electromagnetic signal from your phone and directs it to the hearing amplifier’s processor without using the microphone.  Because the microphone is turned off in this setting, you hear clear sound, free of any distracting noise around you.

The Otofonix Encore comes with an “Earhook kit” that enables you to increase the volume output of your devise for those with a more severe hearing loss. The installed Earhook provides up to 53 dB of gain.

Otofonix Encore Batteries

The battery compartment located on the bottom of the amplifier also acts as the on-off switch. When closed the unit is ON and when open the unit is OFF. We recommend that you fully or completely open the battery door when you go to bed at night in order to conserve battery power.

Otofonix Encore Hearing Amplifier Review

The proper battery size for your Otofonix Encore amplifier is a zinc-air #312. Before inserting
the battery into your amplifier, remove the brown tab and wait 1-2 minutes to allow the battery
to air activate. Your hearing amplifier has a low current drain and the battery should last approximately
7 (16 hour) days or longer. Loud noises drain the battery more than quieter sounds.

About Ear Tips & Ear Domes

There are 3 types of domes – open, closed and everything in between that we will refer to as a hybrid style dome.

An Open Style Dome has large holes and is intended for people with the typical mild to moderate high frequency
hearing loss who do not need much amplification in the low frequencies. The larger openings in the dome allow for low frequency sounds to pass though the dome with minimal amplification and a more natural sound. It eliminates the “occlusion effect” which is similar to putting your fingers in your ear and hearing yourself talk.
On the negative side, open domes are the most prone to feedback (whistle).

A Close Style Dome has no holes in them. This allows the amplifier to more aggressively boost the sound levels as much as 15-20 dB, especially in the low speech frequencies. Often closed domes are the better answer for people suffering from a more severe level of hearing loss. These domes virtually eliminate all feedback that occurs from higher amplification but maximizes the “occlusion effect”.

A Hybrid Style Dome has a small hole or vent and features of both the open and closed dome. These domes provide
greater amplification in the low frequencies than the open domes. The smaller vent also significantly minimizes
the “occlusion effect”and reduces feedback making them more comfortable to wear than the closed domes. These domes are recommended for those with a mild to moderate hearing loss. Several styles are available on their website.
Your Encore comes assembled with a medium sized hybrid (magic) dome but your package also contains an assortment of both open and closed domes to insure the best fit.
It is recommended that they be replaced every 2-3 months and can be ordered on www.otofonix.com.

This Otofonix Encore is equipped with a telecoil feature which can pick up electromagnetic signals from your smartphone and send the sound directly to your ear. When this setting is selected, the microphone is automatically turn off allowing you to hear clear sound without any distracting background noise.
The T-coil is intended to help the wearer filter out background noise.
Public venues, theaters and churches that display this symbol now have “induction or audio Loops” that transmit
the same magnetic signal and provide you with crisp sound in looped environments. In Europe, 85-90% of hearing aids include telecoil. Telecoils and hearing loops are now becoming more common in the United States.

  1. The Otofonix Encore performed as advertised, and the company bent over backward to be helpful. They give clear guidance on how to use and maintain the device. on Although I returned it, I’d order it again — and may well do that if my situation changes. I’m satisfied that Otofonix is at or near the top of the line, and I can’t imagine paying five to 10 times as much for something the FDA recognizes as a “hearing aid.”

My hearing isn’t seriously impaired, and I function well without a hearing aid except in noisy settings — which I try to avoid just because I don’t like them. I had hoped that the directional mike would help that. Long story short, there was some improvement but not enough to convince me to accept the added nuisance of a hearing aid — any hearing aid, not this one in particular. The Encore is inconspicuous and comfortable. But I decided that I don’t want to bother at present with keeping track of one more little gadget having to fiddle with little batteries. Almost at the end of the 45-day trial period I returned it.

One other point. I should add that I had purchased the one-year, no-fault guarantee to replace the device if returned damaged, even if I had stepped on it. The policy clearly stated that the fee would be non-refundable, but Otofonix voluntarily gave a refund because I had returned the Encore in near-new condition during the trial period. They recognized that no one was at risk of my returning to replace a device I’d already returned. (If I had it to do over and planned to keep the device, I’d wait until near the end of the trial period to insure it.) Circumstances differ, so I’d advise other buyers not to assume that the company will necessarily do in every case what they did in mine. I mention this simply as an indication of Otofonix sensitivity to customers — or, in my case, a once-and-maybe-future customer.

  2. I purchased these hearing aids for my wife, who has a hearing problem but doesn’t want to admit it. I’ve worn hearing aids for more than twenty years, so I’m an experienced user. I felt that once she gave these a good try she would realize that she’s been missing a lot and would warm to them. I was wrong about that. Nothing I could do would persuade her to try them long enough to get used to them, so I’m returning them, but felt my experience would be useful to others who are considering Otofonix. I wore them for several days to assess their quality compared to my hearing aids, which cost about $5,000. I find I can hear just about as well with these. The main difference is in features that don’t have much effect on listening quality. My hearing aids are in-the-canal, which means they are fitted, so they lack the feeling of presence that open units such as the Otofonix provides. Try sticking your fingers in your ears and imagine that the sound is coming directly into your ear drums to understand what I mean about presence. My hearing aids can be adjusted with a remote, which is more effective than using the rocker switch on the Otofonix. They are connected wirelessly and adjusted synchronously instead of one at a time while counting beeps. Feedback is less of a problem, and the audiologist can tweak them with a computer. With the Otofonix feedback can be a problem. put your hand to your ear and they may squeal, alerting everyone in the room. Setting the configuration for telephone compatibility is cumbersome, but I generally use the speakerphone anyway. The question is whether the features are worth the extra cost. I believe that depends on whether you can afford it. I’d give them five stars for value, and four stars for overall convenience and usability. These hearing aids remind me of Pareto’s Law, aka the 80/20 rule. You get 80% of the benefits for 20% of the cost.
